Rokiškis, Lithuania

Rokiškis district is a truly remarkable place, offering a small-scale reflection of Lithuania’s landscape in three ways: on the district map, through an islet in Lake Dviragis, and in the shape of Lake Apvalasai. Located in the northeast of Lithuania, within the county of Panevėžys and bordering Latvia, Rokiškis is a picturesque destination full of natural beauty and cultural significance.

The municipality covers an impressive area of 1,807 sq. km, featuring 42 rivers, 99 lakes, and 11 ponds. Among these, Lake Sartai stands out as the fourth largest lake in the country, located between the Rokiškis and Zarasai districts. Other notable lakes include Dviragis, Rašai, Čedasas, Našlys, Zalvė, Jūžintas, and Vazajis.

The expansive Aukštaitija (Highland) plains, along with the rolling green hills, provide a peaceful retreat for visitors. The district’s highest point reaches 175 meters above sea level, while its lowest point sits at 76 meters. Pine and mixed forests blanket much of the area, offering plenty of opportunities for nature exploration. The vast wooded regions of Suvainiškis, Apūniškis, and Salagiris are best explored with careful preparation. Visitors are also advised to avoid venturing into the captivating but tricky marshlands of Suvainiškis, Juodymai, and Paduobys without a knowledgeable guide.

Rokiškis district is home to 3 towns—Rokiškis, Obeliai, and Pandėlys—as well as 9 villages, including Čedasai, Duokiškis, Juodupė, Jūžintai, Kamajai, Panemunėlis, Panemunis, Salos, and Suvainiškis. The area is dotted with 689 small, charming settlements, alongside numerous springs, brooks, and streams, which locals say reflect the souls of their ancestors.

The countryside is rich with cultural and historical landmarks, including barrow landscapes, burial mounds, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, and manor houses. Among these, the Struve Geodetic Arc at Gireišiai Point stands out as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, further highlighting the district’s significance on both national and global levels.
